First you need to find a right location in the yard. Make sure no utility wires are
overhead or below. Some palm trees can grow tall fast, we do not want the palm
trees growing in the lines over head.
After finding the best location decide if you want a direct plant or a raised bed. A
raised bed can help with drainage problems in the future.
Direct planting the tree in the ground: Dig a hole almost twice the size of the palm
trees root ball and twice as deep. Then fill the hole with water and test how long it
takes the hole to drain water. If the water drains in 6-8 hours you should be fine, then
backfill the hole and plant the tree. If it takes the hole a full day or more, it would be
best to change locations.
Raised bed planting: Bring in soil to raise the area you want to plant the palm tree.
For one tree i would make the area 5ft by 5ft or more.
Dig the hole in the new soil and plant. Planting a large palm tree in a raised bed we
suggest supporting the tree for 1 year.
Some Palm tree planting tips: Sometimes we use gravel in the bottom of the hole. It
helps with drain plus the roots love the iron.
Never plant a palm tree too deep. The ground will rot the trunk killing the tree at a
later date.
Mulching: We recommend hardwood or cedar mulch. Mulch will help keep the root
system stay warmer during the winter and will decay into top soil. We suggest a new
layer of mulch every two years.
Pine straw can be placed over the mulch in the fall for a different look.
Most red mulch is pallets ground up, it's just another look.
Soils: Most of the soil in this area is red clay. When digging you will run into hard clay
to about 3 feet down, then the ground will become soft. This is why we suggest
digging deep then back filling. Digging a large hole will not only help you with drain, it
will also help the roots grow better and faster.
Windmill Palm trees love our red clay. The origin of the tree is from the mountains of
China, almost the same environment as ours here. Hard soil and cool weather. That
makes the windmill palm tree our best palm tree we grow. It is the workhorse of the
palm trees in the Carolinas.
Planting Palm trees in containers: This is one good thing about a palm tree, it can be
planted in containers with great success. Planting palm trees in containers will cut
the palm tree height down in size by half.
Example: Palm trees that grow 30ft tall in the wild, will only grow to around 15ft tall in
a large container.

Raised Tropical bed
Keep the tree watered as necessary until it is established. The establishment
period will depend on the type of tree, its size, and whether it was a container
plant or a wrapped root ball specimen. Generally, the roots should be watered
thoroughly, but not flooded. Watering daily for the first few weeks, weekly for the
following few months, then tapering off the watering is a normally suggested
schedule.
Newly planted palms should not be fertilized until after they put out a new
spear, we would say about 3 month after planting. Be sure to fertilize only
during the growing season.
Best time to plant palm trees in our area is, the middle of March until late
September.
